Yemen
Arid mountain climate with minimal rainfall — among the only origins where coffee is grown almost entirely rain-fed.
Soil profile
Rocky, mineral-rich terrace soil built up by hand over centuries.
Growing regions
- Haraz — Historic mountain range, home to Matari-grade coffee
- Bani Matar — Terraced slopes, some of the oldest coffee cultivation on earth
Seasonal cycle
Sold through small local traders — yields are low enough that most lots move by direct relationship, not open market.
The story here
Yemen is where coffee cultivation and trade genuinely began — the word "mocha" itself comes from Al-Makha, the Yemeni port from which coffee first reached the wider world in the 15th and 16th centuries. Farmers still hand-terrace the dry mountainsides of Haraz much as they did then, growing coffee with almost no irrigation and drying it naturally on rooftops — a slow, low-yield tradition that makes genuine Yemeni coffee among the rarest in the world.
