coffee, everywhere
Global Rituals
The same plant, a hundred different ceremonies. A few of our favorites.
Ethiopian Bunna
A full coffee ceremony can take hours: green beans roasted by hand over coals, ground, and brewed in a clay jebena, poured in three rounds — abol, tona, baraka — each one a little weaker, each one still shared.
Turkish Kahve
Finely ground coffee is simmered unfiltered in a cezve, poured slowly so the foam settles on top, and sipped down to the thick grounds at the bottom — sometimes read for fortune once the cup is empty.
Italian Espresso Culture
Standing at the bar, not sitting — espresso in Italy is often a 30-second ritual between other things, ordered simply as 'un caffè' and gone before the crema fully settles.
Vietnamese Cà Phê Sữa Đá
Dark-roast robusta drips slowly through a metal phin filter directly over sweetened condensed milk, then gets poured over ice — a colonial-era workaround for scarce fresh milk that became its own beloved tradition.
